Newington, Connecticut

Newington was part of the town of Wethersfield until it was incorporated in 1871. Before Newington received its current name, the settlement was called Pipestave Swamp, then Cowplain, and later, West Farms. The names reflected the use of the land. The town was a source of staves for making "pipes" - large-sized barrels - which were used in Colonial trade. Then the town land became pasture for cattle. Finally, farms that were developed by the early descendants of the Wethersfield settlers were developed on the western frontier of the settlement. Newington is located in Hartford County and bordered by Hartford, as well as the suburbs of Wethersfield, Rocky Hill, Berlin, New Britain, Farmington, and West Hartford. With an estimated population of 29,000, the town is primarily a residential community, although it is home to the Berlin Turnpike, a busy, commercial highway. Newington is also home to Mill Pond Falls, the smallest natural waterfall in the country.

In the early 1900s, the trolley car and the automobile attracted new residents and businesses to Newington. Improvements to the highway also brought more growth. Later, the trolley was replaced by bus service along the same route. The Connecticut Department of Transportation and The American Radio Relay League, the largest association of amateur radio enthusiasts in the United States, are both headquartered in Newington.
