New Britain, Connecticut

Incorporated in 1871, New Britain is a city in Hartford County approximately nine miles southwest of the Connecticut state capital and about two hours from both Boston and New York. The city is lightheartedly referred to as "New Britski" because of New Britain's large Polish population. The New Britain YMCA is the location where both racquetball and basketball's dribbling technique were developed. In 1869, the wire coat hanger was invented by O.A. North in New Britain. New Britain is home to Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) and Charter Oak State College. Notable tourist attractions in New Britain include The New Britain Museum of American Art, founded in 1903; it is the oldest museum in the country dedicated to American art; and the New Britain Rock Cats, a Minor League Baseball Double-A team affiliated with the Minnesota Twins.

By the early 20th century, New Britain was America's largest hardware manufacturing center thus earning the names the "Hardware Capital of the World" and "Hardware City". Some of the hardware manufacturing giants headquartered in New Britain during this time were Stanley Works (still located in New Britain), Corbin Locks, and North & Judd. Stanley Works was the result of a merger in 1920 between Stanley Bolt Manufactory, founded by Frederich Trent Stanley in 1843; and Stanley Rule and Level Company, founded by Henry Stanley in 1857. Stanley, one of the most recognizable brands of tools, is responsible for producing the Bailey hand plane, the PowerLock tape measure, and the box-cutter knife. Today, New Britain retains a rich mix of manufacturing, medical, high-tech industry and small to mid-sized businesses. New Britain General Hospital is one of New Britain's largest employers.
