Milford, Connecticut

Settled in 1639 and incorporated as a city in 1959, Milford is the sixth oldest town in Connecticut and has the second longest town green in New England. Milford is in New Haven County located between Bridgeport and New Haven. Over the years, the city has expanded significantly with a revitalization of the downtown area and retail growth along Route 1. Milford's current population is currently over 52,000. Its diversified economy supports manufacturing, retail, corporate office, and a service industry. Although primarily a farming community in the 1800s, shipbuilding, oystering, small industry and trade on the open seas from the harbor were part of the local economy. The leather industry along with the making of boots, hats and shoes was dominant in the early 1900s. During World War II, Norden, Milford Rivet, U.S. Motors, and Edgecomb Steel were some companies that were developed to support the war effort. Milford, like many other New England towns, experienced significant suburbanization post World War II. The completion of I-95 by 1960, with its seven exits and entrances, brought easy access to Milford. During the 1960s and 70s, the Connecticut Post Mall, one of the state's largest shopping malls, was constructed and other development along the Route 1 corridor quickly followed. Other notable businesses headquartered in Milford include the consumer giants BIC (most of its operations were moved to Shelton in 2008), Schick Razor, and Subway. Milford Hospital has also developed into an important health care resource for the area.
