Enfield, Connecticut

Enfield is a residential suburban community in Hartford County located along the Connecticut River. Enfield is approximately 18 miles from Hartford and 8 miles from Springfield, Massachusetts. Incorporated in 1683, Enfield was formed through the merging of Enfield, Thompsonville, and Hazardville.

In 1793, a Shaker village, one of nineteen located from Maine to Kentucky, was established in Enfield. The Enfield Shaker community prospered during the first half of the 19th century manufacturing goods, that ranged from bonnets to furniture. The products were crafted with the legendary Shaker quality and simplicity. Eventually, the village was disbanded and the area was redeveloped. In the 1800s, thriving carpet and gunpowder industries supported Enfield's economy. Orrin Thompson, the founder of the carpet industry in Enfield, opened the Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Co. The carpet industry grew rapidly. At its peak, the carpet output from the Thompsonville mills had reached 250,000 yards annually. The last mill closed in 1971. In 1837, Colonel Augustus Hazard joined the Loomis, Denslow and Company and soon became the driving force behind the gunpowder industry in Enfield. The Loomis, Denslow and Company was one of the largest gunpowder suppliers for the Union Army during the Civil War. After many years of decline and a major explosion which destroyed much of the gunpowder mill, operations ceased in 1913. Today, Enfield is home to the North American headquarters of toy manufacturer Lego, Hallmark Cards, and the Enfield Square mall.
