Cheshire, Connecticut

The town of Cheshire was settled in 1694 and incorporated in 1780. It is a residential community located in New Haven County with an estimated population of nearly 30,000. Cheshire’s historic homes are mixed with newer tree-lined neighborhoods and local retailers and industrial businesses unobtrusively shape the composition of the community. In 2009, Cheshire was ranked 72 in Money Magazine's 100 Best Places to Live.

Cheshire was primarily a farming community for its first 170 years. The town has preserved its rural characteristics with thousands of acres of open space and has remained an active agricultural industry despite its industrial and commercial growth. Cheshire found an economic niche in producing bedding plants for local and national consumers which earned the town the name "Bedding Plant Capital of Connecticut" by the Connecticut General Assembly.

Cheshire is home to Cheshire Academy (originally the Episcopal Academy of Connecticut), a college preparatory school. It was the tenth private academy founded in the United States. Cheshire also houses two large state prison facilities located in the northern section of the town. The largest of these facilities is the Cheshire Correctional Institution.
