Situated on the Cache La Poudre River along the Colorado Front Range, the city of Fort Collins is the county seat and most populous city of Larimer County, Colorado. Fort Collins lies 57 miles north of Denver and is a large college town, home to Colorado State University. In 2006, Fort Collins was named Best Place to Live by Money magazine.

Fort Collins’ history dates back to 1864 when the city was founded as a military outpost for the United States Army. Travelers crossing the Overland Trail would often camp in the area, but it was not until 1868 that settlers began arriving by the numbers and Fort Collins became the county seat. The community’s earliest industries were comprised of stone quarrying, sugar-beet farming, and sheep slaughter. In 1901, the Great Western sugar processing plant was established as the city’s first major manufacturing facility. During World War II, Fort Collins’ population double and the economy prospered. The city’s continuous expansion created a significant need for additional electric energy. In the late 1970s, Platte River Power Authority picked Fort Collins as the location for Rawhide Energy Station, a new, coal-fired generating facility. Today, Rawhide Energy Station has five units and supplies electricity to a quarter-million homes. The largest employers located in Fort Collins are Colorado State University, Hewlett Packard, Eastman Kodak, and Poudre Valley Health System.
