Englewood, Colorado

Located in the South Platte River Valley just east of the Front Range, Englewood is the 20th most populous city in the state of Colorado with a total population of over 32,000. The city sits at the confluence of the South Platte River and Little Dry Creek, where gold was discovered in 1858. Thomas Skerritt, considered by many to be founder of the city, established the first road connecting the area to Denver and by 1903, Englewood had become an official incorporated city.

It was not until the 1920s that Englewood experienced substantial expansion; streets were paved, the Chamber of Commerce was formed, and General Irons Works came to Englewood. J.W. Reffel Metals Foundry, Inc. was formed shortly before World War II and began producing aluminum and brass castings for wartime needs and later, for the automotive and machine suppliers. In 1948, a period of change was set in motion when the city purchased 2,500 acres of land on the Platte Canyon for what would become McLellan Reservoir. Englewood claimed its water independence from Denver Water and currently provides water to most of the south metro area thanks to the city’s early-established water rights. Present-day Englewood is a full service city with its own park, library, and publics works systems. Largest employers in Englewood are Swedish Medical Center, Craig Hospital, and Burt Chevrolet.
