Ventura, California

Ventura is a city in Ventura County, California. Officially known as the City of San Buenaventura, it is also the county seat of Ventura County and has a population of nearly 106,500. Ventura was incorporated in 1866. Early industries in Ventura included oil and citrus growing. Today, the city is home to outdoor clothing manufacturer Patagonia and has an active fishing industry. Other top employers include Community Memorial Hospital, Ventura College and the City of San Buenaventura. Ventura is also home to the Brooks Institute of Photography.

Ventura began to develop slowly following the Civil War. A coastal town surrounded by the mountains and canyons of the Los Padres National Forest, Ventura remained rural well into the 20th century, when new highways made it more accessible. The sheltered location, rich soil and mild climate proved ideal for growing citrus fruit. Many of the growers became members of the Southern California Fruit Exchange, which formed in 1893, and is known today as Sunkist Growers, Inc. In addition to growers, Sunkist members also include fruit packinghouses such as Saticoy Lemon Association, whose plant #1 is located in Ventura. In 1890, Thomas Bard organized the Union Oil Company, and in 1916 discovered a large oil field in Ventura. The Ventura field produced 90,000 barrels a day at its peak, and created a population boom. The Seaside Oil Company operated a gasoline refinery in Ventura from the 1920s to the 1960s, when it was taken over by Phillips Petroleum. ConocoPhillips currently operates a pipeline from Ventura to Los Angeles. In recent years, Ventura has also developed as a tourist destination, offering surfing, specialty retail shopping, museums and music festivals.
