South San Francisco, California

South San Francisco is a city on the San Francisco Peninsula in California. Located north of San Bruno in San Mateo County, South San Francisco has a population of approximately 63,600. Despite its name, South San Francisco is not part of San Francisco, and the two cities do not share a border. Incorporated in 1908, South San Francisco has transformed itself from ranch and agricultural land to "the Industrial City". Today, the city is a center for biotechnology companies, including Genentech and Amgen. The city is also home to well-known confectioners See's Candy Shops, Inc.

First settled around 1856, South San Francisco was originally used as ranch land for raising cattle. In 1892, the Western Meat Company established a meat packing plant, stockyards, and employee housing, laying the early groundwork for the city. Western Meat changed its name to Swift & Company in 1932, and finally closed in 1968. By 1908, South San Francisco industry included a paint company, two steel mills, and two brickyards. The Rod McLellan Company, established in the late 1920s, raised hothouse orchids and gardenias until 1998. In 1917, Western Pipe & Steel Company acquired the Shaw Batcher Pipe Works. Western Pipe built merchant ships under Navy contracts during both World Wars. Western eventually became a U.S. Steel subsidiary, and closed down in 1983. The post-war years saw another industrial boom, and construction of a new marina, industrial park and medical center. In 1976, Genentech was founded, becoming one of the first companies to employ recombinant DNA technology for commercial use. Though heavy industry has declined, South San Francisco retains a diverse mix of manufacturing, high-technology and service industries.
