San Pablo, California

San Pablo is a city in Contra Costa County, near San Pablo Bay, California. Located about twenty miles north of San Francisco, San Pablo has a current population of just over 29,000, and is largely surrounded by the city of Richmond. As a commuter suburb of San Francisco, San Pablo is largely residential, with economic activity focusing on healthcare, education, retail and gaming. The city's top three employers are Doctors Medical Center, Contra Costa College and Casino San Pablo.

San Pablo was first settled as a cattle ranch and farmland to provide food for San Francisco's Mission Dolores. The Gold Rush and California's addition to the United States brought new settlers and businesses. Additional settlement followed the 1906 earthquake and many farms were subdivided for new housing. San Pablo was incorporated as a city in 1948. A number of civic districts were created in the same year for the purpose of establishing useful public institutions. The West Contra Costa Healthcare District was founded to build Brookside Hospital. The hospital was completed in 1954, and was renamed Doctors Medical Center in 1997. The Contra Costa Community College District was also established in 1948. Contra Costa College's first location was at the former Kaiser Shipyard in Richmond. The college moved to its current location in San Pablo in 1956. World War II brought a new influx of workers to the Kaiser Shipyard and other nearby factories. Many of the workers settled in San Pablo, and remained after the war ended. Today, San Pablo has the feel of a typical small college city, with shopping districts, walkable streets and open spaces.
