San Bruno, California

San Bruno is a city on the San Francisco Peninsula in California. Located in San Mateo County, San Bruno has a current population of just over 41,000. Settled in the early 19th century as ranchland, San Bruno today is a largely residential community overlooking the San Francisco Bay. Notable employers include internet video site YouTube and Cisco Systems' IronPort division, which specializes in internet security. Until 1994, San Bruno was home to a Naval Advance Base and Classification Center.

San Bruno was largely undeveloped in 1848, when the Mexican-American war ended. Around 1850, a small way station was built for travelers along El Camino Real, the main route to San Francisco. The building eventually became a restaurant and saloon, and was a city landmark until 1949. The railroad came through in 1863, and the Tanforan Racetrack, which would host such famous horses as Seabiscuit and Citation, opened in 1899. The racetrack was also the take-off site for the first successful air-to-ship flight, with pilot Eugene Ely landing aboard the U.S.S. Pennsylvania in 1911. A darker note in the racetrack's history occurred in 1942, when it was used as a temporary internment camp for Japanese Americans. Tanforan Racetrack burned down in 1964, and was replaced with a shopping center. Vacuum tube manufacturers Eitel McCullough Corp. began operations in 1934. The San Bruno plant produced "Eimac" radio equipment until 1959, when the company moved to San Carlos. San Bruno experienced several housing booms, after the 1906 earthquake, and again after World War II, and annexed neighboring Lomita Park in 1953.
