Founded in 1869, Livermore is the oldest wine region in California, framed by award-winning wineries, farm lands and ranches that reflect the valley’s western heritage. Home to more than 80,500, the city of Livermore spans 26.44 square miles on the eastern edge of California's San Francisco Bay Area in Alameda County. Livermore was officially incorporated on April 15, 1876. During the early years, Livermore was notable for the many large hotels that occupied the downtown street corners, before new buildings replaced them; and for the Italian families that played a role in the formation of its wineries. More recently, Livermore’s historic Downtown is undergoing a renaissance, reestablishing the downtown as the city’s premier shopping, dining, entertainment and cultural district.

Livermore is renowned for its science and technology centers. In 1942, the U. S. Government purchased 692 acres of ranch land and built the Livermore Naval Air Station. This facility operated until it was decommissioned in 1946. In 1952, the government established Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) on the site, a federally funded research and development center. Today, LLNL is the largest employer in Livermore. Additionally, Sandia National Laboratories, a National Nuclear Security Administration laboratory operated by Sandia Corporation, is located in Livermore.
