Alhambra, California

Originally founded as a suburb of Los Angeles, the city of Alhambra is located in the western San Gabriel Valley region of Los Angeles County. The city was named after Washington Irving’s book, Tales of Alhambra. After witnessing increased land development and a growing population, Alhambra became an official incorporated city on July 11, 1903.

At the time of the post-War boom in the 1940s, Alhambra’s population reached over 40,000. Union Oil, a major petroleum explorer and marketer, managed operations in Alhambra as did several other significant companies including Jefferson Chemical Company, Magnolia Petroleum Company, and Worthington Pumps and Machinery Corporation. International Extrusion Corporation established a facility in June of 1962 and manufactured aluminum products. Over the years, Alhambra has experienced waves of new immigrants, beginning with Italians in the 1950s, Mexicans in the 1960s, and Chinese in the 1980s. There is a currently a very dynamic Chinese business district in town, with businesses such as Chinese supermarkets, restaurants, shops, banks, realtors, and medical offices. Major employers in the area are the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works, Alhambra Unified School District (including Alhambra High School), Southern California Edison, and Alhambra Hospital.
