The city of Albany is located on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay, bordering the cities of Berkeley and Richmond. In 1908, a group of local women protested the dumping of Berkeley’s garbage in their community and shortly thereafter, the area was officially incorporated under the name of Ocean View. In 1909, voters changed the name to Albany in honor of the Albany, New York birthplace of their first mayor, Frank Roberts.

Albany’s early days were intertwined with the gold and dynamite industries. Gold mining created a demand for dynamite and Albany became home to several powder plants. By the 1930s, Albany had fully claimed its independence from nearby Berkeley and began building Albany High School. World War II brought further development to the city, as the Federal Government built housing projects such as Codornices Village and Veterans Village to accommodate thousands of workers at nearby shipyards. Pacific Bell, Alcan Aluminum and Industrial Forge Company operated facilities in Albany as well, and added to economic diversity. Today, Albany’s economy relies on major retail and business areas on Solano Avenue, San Pablo Avenue, and an area near Eastshore Freeway. The areas range from a pedestrian-oriented street lined with small shops to big-box, commercial complexes, one of which houses a two story Target store. Additionally, the only major horse racing track in Northern California, Golden Gate Fields, is located in Albany and attracts thousands of spectators each year.
