Overview
Dr. Steven M. Albelda currently serves as the Director of Lung Research and Co-Director of the Thoracic Oncology Laboratories at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center in Philadelphia. Within the UPMC, the University of Pennsylvania Cancer Center has been recognized as one the of nation’s best hospitals by U.S. News and World Report. The cancer center has also been recognized by LIVESTRONG organization as an accredited Center of Excellence.
Educational Background
Dr. Albelda received his undergraduate degree from Williams College. He then enrolled in the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Dr. Albelda graduated at the top of his class in 1979, accumulating several academic recognition prizes upon graduation. Dr. Albelda completed post-graduate academic work at UPMC and is now licensed in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine, and critical care.
Clinical Research
Dr. Albelda has worked closely with Dr. Daniel Sterman on a number of clinical research programs, including one focused on immune-gene therapies for thoracic malignancies such as mesothelioma. A phase one trial for mesothelioma patients studies immunogene therapy through the use of an adenovirus delivering interferon-alpha genes in conjunction with an antibody. Through the study, Dr. Albelda and Dr. Sterman are evaluating the effect using genetically altered T-cells to target mesothelioma tumors.
Affiliations and Publications
Dr. Albelda is published in nearly 140 peer-reviewed journals and papers. He has also contributed to a number of research journals and book chapters. Dr. Albelda is the 2010 Wagner Medal recipient from the International Mesothelioma Interest Group. He has received the Physician-Scientist Award from the National Institutes of Health’s Lung Division as now serves as adjunct professor at the prestigious Wistar Institute.
