Pulmonary surgeons are involved with resectable surgery to remove malignancies for those suffering from mesothelioma, a fatal form of cancer. Mesothelioma (including peritoneal mesothelioma and pericardial mesothelioma) is typically caused by exposure to asbestos, a natural occurring mineral popularly used in construction materials. Around 3,000 new cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed each year. However, due to a long latency period of around 20 to 50 years many patients aren't diagnosed until stage 3 mesothelioma which is often too late for effective mesothelioma treatment.
Recognitions and Awards
Dr. Pella has received a number of recognitions including a Patients' Choice Award in 2008. He is also fluent in Italian.
