Dr. Setser received his bachelor’s degree from Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina, and received his M.D. from East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. He completed an internship and a residency, both in general surgery, at the Eisenhower Army Medical Center in Fort Gordon, Georgia. He also served as a resident in thoracic surgery at the Brooke Army Medical Center in Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
Professional Highlights
From 1985 to 1996, Dr. Setser served as an intern, resident, and later, a surgeon in two U.S. Army hospitals; he was promoted to the position of chief of cardiac surgery service at Eisenhower Army Medical Center. He then moved to Huntington, West Virginia, where he served in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Cabell Huntington Hospital. After appointments at the UM School of Medicine and St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Virginia, Dr. Setser accepted a position at the University of Kentucky in 2011.
