Dr. Shirish M. Gadgeel is a lung cancer specialist at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit, Michigan, where he has served since 2000. Dr. Gadgeel leads the hospital's Thoracic Oncology Multidisciplinary Team, serves as medical director of its hematology/oncology inpatient unit, and teaches hematology and oncology at Karmanos' teaching affiliate, Wayne State University School of Medicine.
Dr. Gadgeel received his bachelor's degree in medicine and surgery from Grant Medical College and J.J. Group of Hospitals at the University of Bombay in Bombay, India. After completing a three-year internal medicine residency at the same institution, Dr. Gadgeel moved to the United States for an internship in internal medicine at LaGuardia Hospital in Flushing, New York. In 1994, he relocated to Detroit for further studies at Wayne State University. There he completed a residency in internal medicine, a fellowship in medical oncology, and an additional fellowship in bone marrow transplantation.
As a medical oncologist, Dr. Gadgeel is responsible for the overall treatment strategies and care of his cancer patients. Because cancer treatment can be complex, this often involves coordinating the work of several physicians who specialize in areas like chemotherapy, radiation, surgery and nutrition. In his current role he serves as Team Leader for the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center Thoracic Oncology Multidisciplinary Team.
In his research, Dr. Gadgeel conducts clinical trials in search of new treatment options for lung cancer, including mesothelioma. (One of Dr. Gadgeel's studies targeted new chemotherapy options for patients with peritoneal mesothelioma, or mesothelioma of the abdominal walls.) His research – conducted at Karmanos and at SWOG, a highly respected cooperative group that supports clinical trials – has been supported with grants from the National Cancer Institute, Southwest Oncology Group, universities and pharmaceutical companies.
In addition to his research and work with patients, Dr. Gadgeel is a teacher, currently serving as associate professor in the Division of Hematology & Oncology at Karmanos Cancer Center/Wayne State University. He participates on several faculty committees at Karmanos, including those that set standards for quality patient care, and his work has been recognized by the Wayne State University School of Medicine Teaching Award and a Merit Award from the Society of Clinical Oncology.
Dr. Gadgeel is board certified in medical oncology, hematology (the study of blood and blood diseases) and internal medicine. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the Southwest Oncology Group.
Dr. Gadgeel is the author of dozens of articles and seven book chapters on cancer therapies and experimental new treatments. He also sits on the editorial board of Clinical Lung Cancer. His publications include:
