Overview

Dr. John D. Allendorf is a surgeon and assistant professor of surgery at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital at Columbia University in New York City. His clinical specialties include mesothelioma, particularly mesothelioma of the abdomen, also known as peritoneal mesothelioma. He also specializes in surgeries of the liver and pancreas.

Educational Background

Dr. Allendorf received his bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, and attended medical school at the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons in New York City. Following his graduation, he completed an internship and residency in general surgery at New York-Presbyterian. He went on to serve as administrative chief resident of general surgery and completed a fellowship in liver transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery at the same medical center. Dr. Allendorf has been an attending surgeon at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center since 2002.

Clinical and Laboratory Research

Dr. Allendorf frequently works alongside fellow mesothelioma experts Dr. Robert N. Taub and Dr. John A. Chabot in treating patients afflicted with mesothelioma, especially peritoneal mesothelioma. Dr. Allendorf has taken part in research about the disease with the Columbia University Mesothelioma Center. In addition to mesothelioma, he also treats adrenal tumors, pancreatic cancer, thyroid cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, goiter, and other diseases of the liver, pancreas and endocrine system.

Additional Work

A board-certified surgeon by the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Allendorf is the recipient of a number of profession honors. He was the winner of the Allen O. Whipple Memorial Prize for excellence in surgery and the recipient of a National Institute of Health biomedical research fellowship. He is an American College of Surgeons Associate Fellow and a member of the American Medical Association and the Association of Academic Surgery.
