Educational Background
Dr. Daniel Miller began his medical career by attending the University of Kentucky School of Medicine. After he graduated in 1985, he went on to complete a General Surgery Residency, a Clinical ECMO Fellowship and a Cardiovascular Research Fellowship at Georgetown University Hospital. He then transferred to the Mayo Clinic in 1991 to complete a Fellowship in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. Dr. Miller is board certified by both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
Professional Highlights
Currently, Dr. Miller is working at Emory University School of Medicine. He holds the position of Kamal A. Mansour Professor of Thoracic Surgery in the division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. He is also the Association Program Director of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency Program at Emory. Clinically, he is the Chief of General Thoracic Surgery in the Department of Surgery at Emory as well as Surgical Director of the Thoracic Oncology Program in the Winship Cancer Institute at Emory. Finally, he is the Co-Chair of the Respiratory Center at Emory Healthcare.
Clinical Research
Dr. Miller has a number of clinical interests including bronchoscopy, emphysema surgery, esophageal cancer and reflux, hyperdrosis-microinvasive, and htperthermic pleural lavage. He also has experience with laparoscopic anti-reflux and achalasia surgery, lobectomy, lung cancer, mesothelioma, thoracic surgery and tracheal surgery.
Research interests include the treatment of CT detected small non-small lung cancers and their pathologic characteristics to determine survival rate and recurrence, Trimodality treatment of malignant mesothelioma as well as the development of a minimally invasive treatment program for thoracic malignancies. Specifically relating to mesothelioma, Dr. Miller is studying the utilization of proteinomics for the diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma on the basis of analysis of pleural fluid in patients with significant asbestos exposure as well as the evaluation of hyperthermic pleural lavage for the treatment of malignant pleural effusions.

Dr. Miller is a member of a number of professional associations including the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Chest Physicians, the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the Association of Academic Surgeons. He is also a member of the Society of Surgical Oncology, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, CTS Net and the Mayo Clinic Thoracic Society.
Dr. Miller has authored and co-authored a number of professional articles and abstracts. He also serves on the editorial board of the General Thoracic Surgery Education Project for the Thoracic Surgery Directors Association.
Awards
Throughout his career, Dr. Miller has received a number of awards and honors including the O. T. Clagett Travel Award for Outstanding Resident in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the Mayo Clinic and Mayo Foundation. In the academic field, he won the Teacher of the Year for the Department of Surgery at the Mayo Clinic and another Teacher of the Year for General Thoracic Surgery at Emory in 2006. Most recently, Atlanta Magazine named Dr. Miller Outstanding Physician in Thoracic Surgery from 2007-2008.
