Doctors Affiliated with this Treatment Facility
If you are selecting an asbestos cancer treatment center, it is important to search for a well-regarded facility where the latest drugs, like Cisplatin, are available. Although mesothelioma is now understood as a risk factor of working with asbestos, occurrence of the disorder is still relatively uncommon in the general population; many doctors have never encountered any patients with it. As a result, family physicians and smaller clinics may not have the expertise and background needed to ensure the most effective care for those with mesothelioma cancer. In addition to offering chemotherapy, radiation and surgery, many clinics that specialize in cancer also employ psychologists to assist patients and their family members come to terms with the cancer prognosis. Some areas of the nation do not have state-of-the-art clinics for relatively uncommon disorders such as asbestos lung cancer; if you live in such an area you might need to travel some distance in order to obtain the highest chance of remission.
In July 2009, U.S. News & World Report recognized the University of Chicago Medical Center as being among the best hospitals in the United States.
Programs include research treatment in the following:
- digestive disorders
- endocrinology
- cancer
- kidney disease
- neurology & neurosurgery
- ear, nose & throat
- heart & heart surgery
- respiratory disorders
- geriatrics
- gynecology
- urology
The UC hospitals ranked in the top fifty for all these specialties. Rankings were based on the following criteria:
- ratio between actual and expected mortality
- available technology
- patient/community services
- procedure volume and nursing care
In addition, a poll of 200 specialists in each field averaged over three years was used in the making the determination. In the poll, these doctors were asked to name five hospitals other than the one at which they worked that they considered "best in their specialty for difficult cases, without taking location or expense into account." Out of 5,000 hospitals evaluated, less than 3.5% met that standard in one or more specialties.
