Located in downtown Los Angeles, the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center has been a leader in the fight against cancer since its founding in the late 1960s. With more than 240 physicians and scientist members, the center — which is part of the high-ranking University of California Los Angeles Medical Center — is one of the largest comprehensive cancer centers in the United States.
UCLA’s cancer center was created in the late 1960s by a small group of scientists and volunteers with a shared passion for fighting cancer. In 1976, the National Cancer Institute designated it a “comprehensive cancer center,” a “gold-star” designation reserved for roughly 40 institutions that demonstrate the highest standards in patient care, education, research and prevention.
Despite its humble roots, the center has grown into one of the largest in the country: Today the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center accommodates more than 20,000 patient visits per year. Jonsson’s “parent” hospital is also influential in the medical world. The Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, a 456-bed medical and surgical facility, is consistently ranked among the top hospitals in the country by U.S. News & World Report. Its cancer care ranks 10th in the country with a patient survival rate described as “much better than expected.” More than 100 UCLA physicians are included on the Best Doctors of America list.
Mesothelioma Treatment at the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center,
Being diagnosed with any disease can be scary, and that stress can be compounded when dealing with a rare disease like mesothelioma cancer. With just a couple thousand new diagnoses each year, it’s important for mesothelioma patients to choose a doctor and a hospital with both the experience and the technology to handle their treatment — whichever treatments they may decide upon. Whether looking at traditional modes of treatment or more experimental offerings, the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center is known for providing excellent care.
At UCLA, experts from a variety of cancer-related specialties work together in a team-oriented approach to develop specialized treatment plans for their patients. More than 40 scientific and medical disciplines are represented, including surgery, radiation, education, wellness and support services such as nutrition and psychological services. Education and prevention are also an important part of Jonsson’s work: The center offers a range of programs for people at high risk of cancer because of a family history or genetics.
Cutting-edge tools give Jonsson patients access to the newest advances in cancer-fighting technology; recently, UCLA’s Department of Radiation Oncology was the first in the L.A. area to install Novalis Tx, a state-of-the-art device that provides more accurate, concentrated doses of radiation that allows patients to be treated faster and with fewer side effects.
Johnsson has also established a reputation with regard to its research efforts. Numerous drugs and therapies have been developed thanks to research done in UCLA laboratories and clinical trials. They include Tarceva, a targeted lung cancer drug; Herceptin, a ground-breaking breast cancer drug that attacks cancer at its genetic roots; and the leukemia pill, Gleevec.
After cancer treatment is complete, Jonsson patients benefit from the UCLA-LIVESTRONG program. With funding from the Lance Armstrong Foundation, LIVESTRONG provides clinical care for post-treatment cancer patients, educates the community about caring for cancer survivors, and helps survivors improve their quality of life.
