The role of Navy destroyers has evolved throughout history. They were originally designed to serve as escort vessels for larger ships and to provide defense against attack submarines and other short-range attack vessels and aircraft. Today, modern destroyers are much larger and more heavily equipped to defend against attacks from the air as well as other classes of ships. Those who served on Navy destroyers may have been exposed to airborne asbestos while on board as there were many types of asbestos containing products used in the construction and repair of these ships.
