Gold Bond Asbestos Paper
For nearly a century, one of the most commonly used natural resources in America was a mineral known as asbestos. It was found in large deposits all throughout the country, and proved to be very easy and economical to mine. The mineral is also extremely strong, and since it can be molded into most any shape, it provided a rigid and durable backbone for a large array of products. In addition, asbestos also has a great resistance to cold, heat and even fire.
Companies such as National Gypsum utilized large amounts of asbestos for their construction products. They sold a variety of different goods under their popular Gold Bond brand, which is still well known today. Among the items manufactured by the company was an insulating material known as Asbestos Paper. This was used to cover duct work, pipes and industrial equipment that were used in high temperature environments. The natural attributes of asbestos made it perfect for this job, and the insulation was soon being purchased for use in locations and asbestos jobsites all over America.
Gold Bond's Asbestos Paper and their other products sold well for many years. Things seemed to be going quite well for National Gypsum, but in 1970 a new discovery was made that precipitated a change in the industry. Asbestos was found to be poisonous, and one of the primary causes of mesothelioma. Proximity played a key factor, because microscopic particles of the mineral had to be inhaled for it to be dangerous. These particles were able to float in the air and were commonly breathed in by people who did not even realize what had happened. People who did ingest the asbestos would typically not know it for years or even decades, but the toxic substance would do large amounts of internal damage to the respiratory system, and often develop into diseases such as mesothelioma (including pericardial mesothelioma). There is no known mesothelioma cure. It typically has a long latency period before being detected and hence a mesothelioma prognosis in most cases is not favorable. A short life expectancy after diagnosis has contributed to the low numbers of mesothelioma survivors.
When people did begin to get sick, they also frequently filed personal injury claims against National Gypsum with the help of mesothelioma attorneys. Many lawsuits were brought forth in a short span of time, and more continued to come in over the years.
