Excelon Tile
Tiling can be found in homes, offices, schools and most any type of standing structure ever built. It is a commonly used product that must be tough and durable. There are many different ingredients used to make tiles, but during the early 1900's one of the more common materials was used was a type of mineral called asbestos.
Among the many benefits that asbestos provided was the fact that is extremely strong, pliable and inexpensive to mine. Large deposits of it were found all across America, and companies made millions digging it up and supplying it to manufacturers. As the country continued to grow and prosper, asbestos seemed to be a major component in the construction industry that would be used for as long as supplies lasted. As a result, a growing number of asbestos jobsites where workers could be subjected to the mineral began to form.
By the later 1970's, however, there was a growing realization about the inherent dangers of asbestos. Researchers uncovered a startling fact about the mineral and notified manufacturers that it was actually a toxic substance and could cause mesothelioma. Scientists believed that this knowledge would cause the companies to immediately stop using it, and many did, but some unscrupulous managers opted to continue utilizing the poisonous mineral.
All the asbestos that was included in products for nearly a century were responsible for making thousands of people sick and claiming the lives of many. People would be infected by the poison when microscopic particles of it were unknowingly inhaled. A complete and solid piece of tile was not harmful, but if it were to crack or break apart these particles could get into the air supply and be breathed in. The older tile or any product gets, the more likely it is to start to deteriorate. Those working with or around Excelon Tile is potentially at risk for developing asbestos cancer such as mesothelioma including pericardial mesothelioma. Unfortunately, because there is no mesothelioma cure, the prognosis is typically poor which means the life expectancy for mesothelioma victims is usually short.
Lawsuits were soon being filed by mesothelioma attorneys against the companies that produced any type of product that contained this harmful mineral. As the claims mounted, many companies filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection. This allowed them to create a trust fund with money to pay off all valid existing and future claims, and continue to operate without the use asbestos. When the trust funds were being put together, the planners were able to picture the problem being long term, and they were correct. Even today new claims are filed against companies that have not used asbestos for more than two decades.
