Established in 1820 as Middletown, then in Monongalia County, the city was later officially chartered by the Virginia General Assembly in 1843 as Fairmont, and currently serves as the seat of Marion County. Fairmont, the “Friendly City”, is home to more than 19,000 people. Fairmont is recognized as the "The Home of the Original Pepperoni Roll". Invented by Giuseppe "Joseph" Argiro at the Country Club Bakery in Fairmont, in 1927, the pepperoni rolls originated as a lunch option for the coal miners of north-central West Virginia.
