Known as the “Concrete City” in the 1850s, it was the site of nearly 100 homes constructed of limecrete, a locally invented type of concrete. Seguin’s original economy was centered on agriculture as the land was rich in oil and minerals. By the Civil War, Seguin residents were growing cotton, corn and peanuts and raising livestock. In 1920s and 1930s, when oil was discovered at the nearby Darst Creek Field an oil boom ensued. Seguin survived the oil boom and benefited greatly accumulating a collection of civic buildings and park facilities from the economically prosperous period. During the mid to late 1900s, Seguin attracted manufacturing and service-oriented industries to diversify its agricultural and oil-based economy. Today, plants making steel, electronic products, mowing equipment, construction material provide a solid industrial base.
