Garland, Texas

Garland, incorporated in 1891, is a city in Dallas and Collin counties. It is an inner suburb situated northeast of Dallas and is a major part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Home to approximately 222,000 residents, Garland is the 12th most populous city in Texas and the 92nd most populous city in the United States. CNN and Money Magazine ranked Garland 67th on their list of the "Top 100 Places to Live" list in 2008. Entertainment and attractions in Garland include Hawaiian Falls, Patty Granville Arts Center, and Firewheel Golf Park.

In the early 1920s, the city of Garland officially entered the electric and water utility business forming Garland Power & Light which grew to include two generating plants, C.E. Newman and Ray Olinger. With more than 62,000 customers, Garland Power & Light has grown to become the 3rd largest municipal electric system in Texas and the 33rd largest in the United States. In 1927, a devastating tornado destroyed much of the town and killed 17 people. However by the late 1930s, businesses began moving back into the area. The Craddock food company and later the Byer-Rolnick hat factory (now owned by Resistol) moved operations to Garland. In 1937, KRLD, a major Dallas radio station, built its radio antenna tower in Garland, and it is still in operation today. As a station on two railroads, Garland was a major onion-shipping point in the 1940s. During the World War II, several aircraft plants operated in the Garland area. After the war, Kraft Foods bought the Continental Motors Plant to retool for its own use. In 1990, Garland had a variety of industries including electronics, steel fabrication, oilfield equipment, aluminum die casting, hat manufacture, dairy products, and food processors. Today, Garland is one of the largest manufacturing cities in Texas with over 375 manufacturers.
