Piqua, Ohio

Piqua is a city on the Great Miami River in Ohio. Located in Miami County, Piqua has a current population of just over 20,700. Once a center of linseed oil and underwear manufacture, Piqua today combines manufacturing, retail, and education with a lively arts scene. Notable employers include Hartzell Propeller division of Hartzell Industries and gardening supply company A.M. Leonard, both more than a century old, and newer manufacturers, such as Crayex Corporation, Evenflo and Polysource.

In 1807, a town was formally laid out, and the name Piqua was made permanent in 1816. The Miami and Erie Canal was the town's major transport route from 1837 through the 1850s. By 1860, Piqua had two railroad lines, and canal traffic diminished, although it remained in use for heavy freight until 1912. Flax was a major crop in the region, and by the late 19th century, Piqua had become a center for linseed oil production. The French Oil Mill Machinery Company, which began making equipment for linseed oil processing in 1900, is still in operation today. In 1890, Piqua's largest manufacturer was the Favorite Stove & Range Company, turning out 50,000 stoves per year at its peak. Much of the firm was liquidated in 1935, and the company ceased production altogether in 1958. Many of Piqua's businesses, including Hartzell Propeller and Atlas Underwear, weathered two World Wars with the help of government contracts for war materials, but industry declined somewhat after the 1950s. Encouragement of new technologies, such as plastics and electronics, has helped Piqua maintain a stable manufacturing base into the 21st century.

Piqua's diverse history of industry, construction and historic renovation place it in a high-risk category for asbestos exposure. Workers and their loved ones who have been exposed to asbestos may be at risk for asbestos cancer. If you were exposed to asbestos in Piqua and have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you should also consider contacting a mesothelioma law firm.
