Mansfield, Ohio
The city of Mansfield is the county seat of Richland County, Ohio. Located on a fork of the Mohican River in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains, Mansfield has a population of nearly 48,000 residents. Founded in 1808, Mansfield was incorporated as a city in 1857. With the advent of the railroads in 1846, Mansfield was ripe for manufacturing growth. The Tappan Stove Company opened a factory in Mansfield in 1889, producing gas ranges until its sale in 1979. In conjunction with Raytheon, Tappan also produced the first home microwave ovens. Westinghouse Electric Company established its home appliance division in 1914. Westinghouse soon became Mansfield's largest employer and in 1934 built the Home of Tomorrow, a demonstration home fully equipped with modern Westinghouse products. AK Steel Corporation’s Mansfield Works, a former Armco Steel plant, has been in operation since at least 1914 under various names, including Empire Steel and Mansfield Sheet & Tin Plate Company. Today AK Steel is one of Mansfield’s last heavy industries, producing flat-rolled steel. Manufacturing began to decline in Mansfield during the 1970s, and the healthcare, education and retail have made up some of the difference. In recent years, Mansfield has also focused on tourism and historic preservation.
