New Rochelle, New York

The City of New Rochelle is located in southeastern New York State. New Rochelle has an estimated population of 71,688, occupying a 10.67 square mile area on Long Island Sound. A former summer resort for wealthy New York businessmen, New Rochelle has a large proportion of single-family homes. New Rochelle was largely agricultural until the 19th century. With the arrival of the railroad in 1848, New Rochelle became more attractive to both industry and immigrants. New Yorkers who had previously built luxurious summer homes in town became year-round residents, able to commute to their city businesses by train. In 1889, G.P. Putnam and Sons publishers built a substantial factory to house their Knickerbocker Press facilities. This landmark building has also seen use as a bandage factory, and artists' studios, and was converted into residential lofts in 2007. Other New Rochelle industries have included P.J. Tierney Diner Manufacturing, Flynn Burner Company, and several film studios. In recent years, a number of former industrial spaces have been replaced by large retailers. The site of the former New Rochelle Municipal Incinerator is now occupied by a Costco wholesale club.
