Bloomfield, New Jersey

Bloomfield is a township in Essex County, New Jersey. Originally settled as part of Newark in 1666, Bloomfield was incorporated as a separate township in 1812. Bloomfield is organized around a central historic area and has a current population of about 47,300. Bloomfield's economic development follows a pattern typical of many northern cities - early industrialization and growth, followed by suburbanization and a gradual shift towards more service-related businesses. Notable employers include the Town of Bloomfield, Hartz Mountain Corporation and ABB Lummus Global Inc. Bloomfield is also home to Bloomfield College.

Bloomfield's early industries reflect the needs of a growing community and the abundance of water power available: saw and gristmills, paper mills, textile and paint factories, shoemakers and wheelwrights. A railroad connection from Newark was established in 1856 and by the end of the 19th century; Bloomfield had electric light and power, municipal water and sewer lines and telephone service. The 20th century brought modern industries to Bloomfield. Sprague Electric Company, which was founded in 1892, was acquired by General Electric in 1902. Under GE, the plant expanded to a 17-building complex. Although GE relocated in 1959, several of the buildings are still standing. The Condensite Corporation of America, founded in 1910, consolidated with several other companies in 1922 to become Bakelite Corporation. Peerless Tube Company relocated to Bloomfield in 1912, and was among the first companies to incorporate plastic caps and necks in its squeezable metal tubes designed for toothpaste, paints and medicines. Other companies which have called Bloomfield home include Walter Kidde & Company, Delco-Remy Corporation and Westinghouse Lamp Company. Manufacturing has declined somewhat since World War II, and retail, education and other service industries have grown.
