Sparrows Point, Maryland

Sparrows Point is an unincorporated area near Dundalk and Edgemere, Maryland. Located on the Chesapeake Bay, Sparrows Point has long been dominated by the steel working and shipbuilding industries. The acquisition in 1886 of more than 1200 acres of land by the Pennsylvania Steel Company marks the origin of modern-day Sparrows Point. Formerly the world's largest steel mill and a shipbuilding giant, Sparrows Point has seen a reduction in these activities in recent years. Redevelopment projects under consideration include a business and technology park, shipyard and liquid natural gas terminal.

Sparrows Point's original 1886 development included an open-hearth furnace steel mill for the Pennsylvania Steel Company, as well as a company town, which would be named Sparrows Point. A shipyard was begun in 1891. In 1916, the steel mill and shipyard were purchased by the Bethlehem Steel Company, which promptly began expansion of the facility. By the mid-20th century, the mill was the largest in the world, serviced by four railroads, and the shipyard had turned out hundreds of ships during World Wars I and II. More expansion and upgrades followed in the early 1970s, including the demolition of the former Sparrows Point company town. In the 1980s, financial difficulties and declines in the steel industry have resulted in succession of owners at the steel mill, most recently Russian-based Severstal. The shipyard is currently owned by Barletta Industries Inc., which is considering redevelopments.
