Gary, Indiana

Gary is a city in Lake County, Indiana. Located along the shores of Lake Michigan and on three major Interstates, Gary is in the southeastern section of the Chicago metropolitan area, about 25 miles from downtown Chicago. With a population of about 80,000, Gary is the seventh-largest city in the state. It was founded in 1906 by the United States Steel Corporation as the home for its new plant. The city was named after the lawyer and founding chairman of U.S. Steel, Elbert H. Gary. The city of Gary is still known for its large steel mills.
