Springfield, Illinois

Springfield is the capital city of Illinois. With a population of about 116,000, Springfield is also the county seat of Sangamon County. Settled about 1818, Springfield is well-known as the home of Abraham Lincoln, who lived in the city from 1837 to 1861. Springfield's status as a county seat since 1821 has made government occupations, banking and commercial trading important parts of Springfield's economy from its earliest days. Today the State of Illinois is the city's largest employer, followed by Memorial Medical Center and St. John's Hospital. The University of Illinois at Springfield and the Illinois National Guard are also among the top employers.
Agriculture, commercial trading and professional occupations formed much of Springfield's early economy. After the Civil War, the city became a major railroad center. Coal mining was also a key industry by 1900. The mid-to-late 19th century saw a variety of small manufacturing in Springfield. The F. Reisch & Bros. brewery got its start in 1849 and operated continuously until 1966. In 1883, Henry Nelch founded a paving and sewer installation company. Today, Henry Nelch and Son Company, the firm sells commercial doors, brick pavers and other landscaping and masonry supplies. M.J. Kellner is another longtime city resident, having begun its food distribution service in 1920. The City Water, Light and Power Company undertook the construction of an artificial lake in 1933. The lake was completed in 1935, along with a new powerhouse and water purification plant. Lake Springfield currently provides drinking water and recreation for the city. Memorial Medical Center was founded in 1897 as the Springfield Hospital and Training School.
Springfield's lengthy history of manufacturing and commercial construction makes asbestos exposure, and the risk of asbestos cancer, an ongoing concern. Mesothelioma lawyers may also be able to assist you if you or a loved one were exposed to asbestos in Springfield.
