Groton, Connecticut

Groton was incorporated as a town in 1705 and received its name in honor of the Winthrop estate in England. Groton is situated on Fishers Island Sound between the Thames and Mystic Rivers in New London County. Groton is often referred to as the "Submarine Capital of the World" due to its enduring history of submarines, coupled with the fact that it has one of the largest submarine bases in the world, the Groton Submarine Base. Groton is a center for commerce and industry. It is also a tourist destination because of its shoreline location and numerous historical monuments and sites such as Fort Griswold. Pfizer, one of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies, maintains a 137-acre research and development facility in Groton. Groton is also home to the University of Connecticut’s Avery Point campus.

Early settlers to Groton were primarily farmers, but supplemented their livelihood with shipbuilding and the maritime trade. Groton vessels initially traded with Boston and New York and shortly thereafter found their way to the West Indies and across the Atlantic. After the Revolutionary War, shipping and commerce boomed and shipyards developed. After the Civil War, in 1868, a Navy Yard was established on the Thames River. It was later officially commissioned as the Naval Submarine Base New London, the Navy’s first Submarine Base. In 1911, Electric Boat established the New London Ship & Engine Co. in Groton. Electric Boat Corporation, a subsidiary of General Dynamics, has been supplying the Navy with submersibles since the early 1900s. During World War II, Electric Boat completed submarines every two weeks delivering a total of 74 diesel submarines to the Navy. In 1954, Electric Boat launched the USS Nautilus, the world's first nuclear powered submarine.
