Los Alamitos, home to less than 12,000 residents, is a small city in northwest Orange County, California. The city was incorporated in March 1960. Los Alamitos has evolved from its rancho days through the sugar beets industry period, and currently boasts a highly diversified economic base, which consists of light industry, manufacturing, commercial businesses, and retail. Among Los Alamitos major employers are Arrowhead Products, Timken, and Bloomfield Bakers. Los Alamitos is also the site of the Joint Forces Training Base, which has a daily average of 850 employees and supports 3,500 military members of the Army, Navy, National Guard and Marines. The JFTB was originally established in 1942 as a Naval Air Station by the Department of the Navy to support the war effort. It employed thousands of people, and it spurred growth in the city. In 1973, the base was designated an Armed Forces Reserve Center.

In 1896, the sugar-beet processing industry took root in the Los Alamitos area. That same year, ex-Senator William Clark formed the Los Alamitos Sugar Company, the first beet sugar factory in Orange County. The sugar-beet factory complex, with its streets of company houses for workers, became the basis for a Los Alamitos townsite. Within a few years, there were five beet sugar factories in the county, all larger than Los Alamitos. In 1926, the combination of droughts, competition from Cuban sugar, low prices, and persistent nematode parasite, made it more efficient for the Clark family to close the factory. In 1926, after the owners determined to ship their sugar to the Holly factory, the Los Alamitos Sugar Company also sold their processing equipment.
