Dr. McCachren began his medical career by attending Duke University and then stayed to complete his Residency and Fellowship at the school. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology and Hematology.
Dr. McCachren currently serves at the Thompson Oncology Group and is considered a specialist in the treatment of mesothelioma. The Thompson Oncology Group is a part of the Thompson Cancer Survival Center in East Tennessee. The center was founded to bring together world-class cancer specialists and advanced technology to research and treat many types of cancer. There is a complete support team that includes dieticians, genetics counselors, physicist, pharmacists, therapists, technologists, oncology nurses and social workers to provide the best treatment options for patients.
Malignant mesothelioma is a fatal form of cancer often caused by exposure to airborne asbestos fibers. Due to a long latency period, symptoms of the disease typically take between 20 and 50 years to appear, often the disease is diagnosed in later stages and too late for any effective treatment. However, new treatment options continue to be researched.
