Doctors Affiliated with this Treatment Facility
Located in sunny Albuquerque, New Mexico, the University of New Mexico (UNM) Cancer Center is the southwestern state’s only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center. The facility offers comprehensive treatment services and community resources while its cancer specialists take on new research and clinical trials. The UNM Cancer Center has been named the “official cancer center” of the state of New Mexico by the state’s legislature.
The UNM Cancer Center is part of the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, the largest academic health complex in the state. The complex – which includes the UNM Hospitals, College of Nursing, School of Medicine, Cancer Research and Treatment Center, College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center – was created in 1994 when the university’s Board of Regents voted to unite the school’s health-related academic and clinical organizations into one entity.
The UNM Cancer Center’s first building was constructed in 1973, at a time when the Center was seeing fewer than 100 patients each day. But it became clear over the years that a new clinic was vital to handle the Center’s workload: by the late 2000s, the clinic was seeing 400 patients per day. After nearly a decade of construction, the UNM Cancer Center got its new home in August 2009, when it opened the state-of-the-art, $90 million, 206,000-square-foor UNM Cancer Treatment and Clinical Research Facility. Designed for the best patient care and comfort, the new building contains new facilities for the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of cancers.
More than 11,000 patients are seen each year at the UNM Cancer Center; the facility handles more than 124,000 total patient visits per year. That total represents more than 65 percent of the adults and nearly all of the children diagnosed with cancer in the state of New Mexico. The hospital has also extended its reach into other areas of the state through collaborative programs with clinics in Las Cruces, Santa Fe and Farmington.
Mesothelioma Treatment at the University of New Mexico Cancer Center
The UNM Cancer Center offers treatments for a long list of cancers, including skin cancers, gastrointestinal cancers, neurological cancers and thoracic cancers like pleural mesothelioma. The Center is home to the largest and most experienced team of cancer experts in the state, including more than 85 board-certified oncologist physicians recruited from some of the most prestigious cancer hospitals. In addition to patient care, the Center is also the home to cutting-edge research conducted by 120 researchers. Partnerships with Sandia National Laboratories, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute and New Mexico State University help bolster the Center’s research capabilities.
Generally, cancer specialists fight mesothelioma with a combination of three treatments: surgery (either of the entire lung or just the affected lining), chemotherapy and radiation. Research has shown that used together, these are more effective than any one of the treatments on its own. Mesothelioma patients at the UNM Cancer Center may be asked if they would like to take part in a clinical trial; these new and experimental therapies can provide patients with access to the new and exciting treatments and also give doctors insight into how these therapies work.
The UNM Cancer Center also offers a set of Integrative Medicine therapies to help make patients more comfortable throughout the treatment process and also to make therapies more effective. These offerings include massage, acupuncture, nutrition, the arts and support services for both patients and their families.Sources
