If you have been stricken with mesothelioma, a type of asbestos cancer, you would be wise to consider a number of factors before choosing which hospital or specialized cancer center is best for you. The number of alternatives for mesothelioma treatment is constantly rising as medical researchers discover more about how the disease works and as drug companies conduct clinical trials of new cancer-fighting drugs, like Carboplatin, Gemcitabine, and Alimta®. As a result, general practitioners and smaller, community hospitals might not have the expertise and background needed to ensure the best care for patients who have pericardial mesothelioma. Besides offering medications, radiation and surgical treatment, many hospitals that specialize in cancer treatment also have psychologists on staff to help patients and their loved ones handle the difficulty of dealing with their cancer prognosis. In some cases, the best choice isn't located close to your home; if that is the case you may need to offset the hassles of traveling to receive treatment (as well as the related costs for you and your family) with the advantages of receiving medical care from health care professionals who specialize in treating malignant mesothelioma patients.

The University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMCCC) operates under the auspices of the University of Michigan Health System and one of only 39 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the nation.
