Asbestos Exposure in Longview, WA

The city of Longview is located at the juncture of the Cowlitz and Columbia Rivers in the state of Washington. With a population of about 36,600, Longview is the largest city in Cowlitz County. This planned lumber city was built in 1921 and incorporated in 1924. Although paper and lumber products are still primary manufactures in Longview, other economic segments include chemical and plastics manufacturing, healthcare, and retail. Top employers include Weyerhaeuser/NORPAC, Longview Fibre Paper & Packaging, Inc., ToyocomEpson Seattle and Kaiser Permanente.

Longview owes its initial creation to the Long-Bell Lumber Company, which purchased a large tract of timberland in 1918. In 1921, with one mill under construction and a second planned for the nearby town of Kelso, the company realized that a new city would be needed to support the 14,000 additional workers required by the mills. Longview was planned as a complete city, with a hotel, high school, library and even a YMCA. Included in the city plan is the Port of Longview, an active shipping port which currently has eight marine terminals and handles goods ranging from lumber to windmills. Long-Bell attracted other paper companies as well. In 1927, alongside the main sawmill, Longview Fibre Paper & Packaging built a mill to make Kraft paper packaging from Douglas Fir waste generated by Long-Bell. Weyerhaeuser built a lumber mill on the opposite side in 1931. Financial difficulties forced Long-Bell to reorganize in 1935, and subsequently merge with International Paper in 1956. Although International Paper ceased its Longview operations in 1979, and has since demolished most of the original structures, Weyerhaeuser/NORPAC and Longview Fibre are still active. Although the eruption of Mt. St. Helens in 1980 caused economic setbacks, redevelopment projects such as the Mint Farm Industrial Park have sought to encourage new industry in Longview.

Longview has a history of manufacturing and construction in industries known for their use of asbestos and asbestos-containing materials, making the risk of mesothelioma a cause of concern for workers and their loved ones. If you were exposed to asbestos in Longview and have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you should also consider contacting a mesothelioma law firm.
