Asbestos Exposure in Portsmouth, VA

Located on the western bank of the Elizabeth River directly across from Norfolk, Portsmouth is an independent city in Virginia’s Hamptons Roads metropolitan area with an approximate population of 95,000. Portsmouth was founded as a town in 1752, and was named after the English naval port town of the same name. The city served as county seat of Norfolk County from 1803 up until 1963, when the county was divided into independent cities.

The onset of World War I brought major naval expansion to Portsmouth. Three new drydocks were established and Norfolk Naval Shipyard built the Navy’s first airplane carrier, the U.S.S. Langley. During World War II, 101 new ships were built and National Guard Units from Portsmouth served in all theatres of war. In years following Virginia Electric and Power, a company with roots dating back to the Colonial era, added new stations to keep up with the demand of electric customers. Virginia Electric and Powers Company operated the world’s first extra-high-voltage transmission system and by the 1970s, VEPCO’s first nuclear stations were in service. Other corporations attracted to Portsmouth’s favorable economy over the years include Moon Engineering Company, Inc., Murro Chemical, and Westinghouse Electric Company. As a result of the many years of heavy industrial use, Portsmouth’s downtown district required significant modernization and cleanup. In the 1980s, several revitalization and beautification projects were completed, including a new waterfront park, renovated City Park with boat ramp, and new streets and lighting.
