In 1906, the Texas Company (later Texaco) purchased and remodeled the plant, attracting more refineries and oil-related industries that would provide Port Neches with a basis for its economy. In 1927, Port Neches incorporated. In 1955, A 100,000-ton butadiene plant built by the federal government at Port Neches during World War II was sold to Goodrich-Gulf and Texas U.S. Chemical. Despite a severe economic decline caused by lower oil prices in the 1980s, the city continued to grow. In 2000, Port Neches’ population was 13,601 with 327 businesses. For a small community, Port Neches can boast of having one of the largest synthetic rubber plants in the world and a multi-million dollar chemical plant. Some of the largest employers in Port Neches today include Huntsman, Premcor, and Motiva.
