Asbestos Exposure in Odessa, TX

Located in the heart of the vast oil-rich area known as the Permian Basin, Odessa is the largest city in and the county seat of Ector County. Initially founded as a water stop and cattle shipping point on the Texas and Pacific Railway, Odessa incorporated as a city in 1927 after oil was discovered in Ector county on the Connell Ranch southwest of Odessa. Today, Odessa is home to nearly 100,000 residents, it is the main shipping point for the surrounding livestock area as well as a center for the oil and gas industry and influential urban center. Odessa offers a small town atmosphere with the amenities of a large community.

Odessa’s once sleepy small cowtown evolved into a prosperous oil center and grew rapidly after the opening of Penn Field in 1929 and Cowden Field in 1930. Demand for oil grew during World War II, Odessa’s population exceeded 10,000 and by the end of the 1960s, the population grew to more than 80,000. During the 1950s, Odessa became the world's largest inland petrochemical complex. Operations began in the late 1950s as the nation's first privately financed, fully integrated plant for synthetic rubber manufacture. The plant, a joint venture of El Paso Natural Gas Company and General Tire and Rubber Company, was developed to use waste products from gas and oil production to make the rubber. Consequently, Odessa developed as a major distribution and processing point in the petrochemical industry. Nonetheless, steps were taken by the city to ensure a diversified economy. In recent years, many companies have set up operations in Odessa including Family Dollar Corporation, Telvista, and Coca Cola. Also in recent years, there has been an increase in construction of new retail space particularly in the Odessa's Northeast region.
