Cranston, once known as Pawtuxet, is one of the major commercial and industrial cities of Rhode Island today. It is located just south of Providence at the mouth of Narragansett Bay. Cranston is a part of the Providence metropolitan area, it is the third-largest city in Rhode Island and has a population of nearly 80,000. Cranston today is a city of contrasts. Although a city since 1910, Cranston does not have an urban center. It is a modernized bayside community, yet boasts a wealth of historical sites and interesting architecture. It is heavily populated in the east, yet it is largely rural in the west. Popular historic sites include the Budlong Pool, one of the largest outdoor swimming pools in the country; Sprague Mansion, built in 1790 and home to a prominent family in Cranston; and Oaklawn Village, one of the country’s first residential suburbs. In 2006, Money magazine named Cranston one of the “100 Best Places to Live” in the United States.

Primarily an agricultural community throughout its early history, Cranston was the hub of Rhode Island’s greatest nineteenth century industrial empire. Enterprises that thrived during this time included textile manufacturers (The Rhodes brothers of Cranston produced the first woolen broadcloth in the United States), grist mills, fulling mills, screw factories, jewelry business, and aluminum producers. However, the most notable and significant of Cranston’s industries was the Cranston Print Works, owned and operated by the prominent Sprague family.

Cranston’s significant industrial and manufacturing history have made exposure to asbestos an issue for workers and others. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with mesothelioma in Cranston, you may benefit from contacting Dr. Raphael Bueno. Additionally, an asbestos lawyer may be able to give guidance if you were exposed to asbestos in Cranston, Rhode Island.
