Asbestos Exposure, Mesothelioma Doctors and Lawyers in Ponca City, Oklahoma

Located in north central Oklahoma, Ponca City is the largest city in Kay County. Currently home to nearly 26,000 people, Ponca City was founded in true Oklahoma fashion during the land runs of the late 1800s. On September 16, 1893, homesteaders lined up for a race to claim one of the 160-acre farm sites in the area surrounding what became Ponca City. Named for one of five neighboring tribes of Indians, Ponca City has a significant concentration of buildings that exemplify the popular Spanish revival architecture of the period, as well as art deco-influenced buildings and homes. Ponca City is home to several landmarks on the National Register of Historic Places including the Poncan Theater, the Marland Mansion, and Marland's Grand Home. The city is also the site of the Pioneer Woman Museum and the Pioneer Woman statue which was erected to commemorate women pioneers.

Ponca City's economy was largely driven by agriculture and oil. E.W. Marland built the Ponca City refinery in 1918 and founded the Marland Oil Company, which at one time controlled approximately 10 percent of the world's oil reserves. In 1929, the Continental Oil Company merged with Marland, and the two became Conoco Inc. The Conoco headquarters was in Ponca City until 1949, when it moved to Houston, Texas. In 2002, Conoco Inc. and Phillips Petroleum Company merged into ConocoPhillips. ConocoPhillips has approximately 1,500 employees and 650 contractors in its facilities in Ponca City. The company has a credit card center, a refining complex, a technology research center, and a transportation office. The Ponca City Refinery, operated by ConocoPhillips, is the largest refinery in the state of Oklahoma. In 2007, ConocoPhillips opened the Conoco Museum across from its Ponca City refinery which features artifacts, photographs and other historical items related to the petroleum industry and its culture in northern Oklahoma.

Ponca City’s rich history in the petroleum industry may have exposed workers to asbestos materials. Workers and others were unaware of the perils posed by asbestos exposure and the inherent risks of developing mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases. If you were exposed to asbestos in Ponca City, Oklahoma and have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you should consider contacting a mesothelioma law firm.
