Asbestos Exposure, Mesothelioma Doctors and Lawyers in Fremont, Ohio

The City of Fremont is the county seat of Sandusky County, Ohio. Located along the Sandusky River near Lake Erie, Fremont has a population of approximately 17,300. Fremont's economy draws on a mix of business sectors, including manufacturing, healthcare and specialty retailers. Current employers include Century Die, H.J. Heinz Company, and Memorial Hospital. The historic downtown area is carefully maintained, and offers shops, galleries, restaurants and a movie theater. Fremont is also home to the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center.

The first settlement in the Fremont area was Fort Stephenson, a military outpost built in the late 18th century. Fremont itself was formed in 1822 from the merger of Croghansville and Lower Sandusky. Initially called Lower Sandusky, the name was changed to Fremont in 1849 to avoid confusion with similarly-named towns. Fishing and shipping were significant early industries, but declined after the construction of the canals. The construction of railroads and paved roads toward the end of the century contributed towards Fremont's industrial growth in the following decades. Built in 1918, Memorial Hospital has been locally owned since it first opened, providing healthcare throughout Sandusky County. In 1937, the H.J. Heinz Company built a ketchup bottling plant in Fremont. Today, the Heinz ketchup factory is the largest in the world, producing nearly 34 million cases annually. Century Die Company was established in 1946 and produces custom machine tools and blow molds. Other companies which have had a presence in Fremont include Union Carbide Corporation and Northern Ohio Sugar Company.
