Mesothelioma Doctors, Lawyers and Asbestos Exposure in Troy, New York

The City of Troy is located on the east bank of the Hudson River in New York State. With a population of just over 49,000, Troy makes up one segment of the Albany-Schenectady-Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area, also referred to as the Capital District. Like many northern industrial cities, Troy's economy has shifted in recent decades from manufacturing to higher education, service-oriented fields, and tourism. Troy's historic districts are a virtual catalog of American architectural styles, from Colonial to Egyptian Revival, making it a desirable location for motion picture filming. Oakwood Cemetery, established in 1848, is an example of the many picturesque "garden cemeteries" popular during the 19th century. Troy is also home to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, a renowned engineering university founded in 1824, and currently the city's largest private employer.

Settled in the 17th century, Troy was incorporated as a town in 1791, then as a city in 1816. The city began to develop industrially after the War of 1812, first as a transport center for meats and produce, then as a producer of iron and steel. The Rensselaer Iron Works, established in 1846, built the first ironclad warship, the Monitor. The iron works was succeeded by Ludlow Valve Company, and later by Scolite Roofing before closing in the 1990s. The remaining factory buildings were destroyed by arson in 2008. Beginning around 1825, Troy also became a leading producer of shirts, detachable shirt collars & cuffs. Cluett, Peabody & Company produced shirts and collars made famous by the "Arrow shirt collar man", the elegant creation of illustrator J.C. Leyendecker. Arrow shirts are still made today, but Cluett, Peabody's last Troy plant closed its doors in the 1980s. In the 20th century, Troy is no longer a heavy industry city, but has begun to attract high-tech and creative industries, in part due to its architectural and engineering heritage.
