Asbestos Exposure, Mesothelioma Doctors and Lawyers in Rome, New York

Rome is a city in upstate New York. Incorporated in 1870, the 72 square mile city occupies an area once known as the Oneida Carrying Place, a critical portage path on the trade route from Lake Ontario to the Hudson River, and a site of strategic importance during the French and Indian War and the American Revolution. A reconstruction of Fort Stanwix, originally built in 1762 to guard the portage, has been operated as a National Park since the 1970s. Rome is also the site of a rare environmental area, the Rome Sand Plains. The Sand Plains are a 15,000-acre pine barrens, with multiple habitat area including sand dunes, bogs, and hardwood forest; rare plants and animals can be found here, and portions are accessible to hikers and cyclists.

Though settled in the 18th century, Rome began to develop as an industrial area after the opening of the Erie Canal. In 1851, Jesse Williams established the first cheese factory. In 1869, Rome boasted two foundries, the Rome Iron & Steel Bloom Company and the Rome Iron Works, which produced iron for the railroads. A third foundry, the Rome Merchant Iron Mill, was under construction. The New York Fuller's Earth and Soap Manufacturing Company was headquartered in Rome. In the 20th century, Rome became known as the "Copper City," producing 10% of the country's copper goods. Revere Copper and Brass, Inc. was formed in 1928 and 1929 from the merger of several companies, one of which traced its roots back to the copper rolling mill established by Paul Revere in 1801. Today, Revere Copper Products, Inc. maintains headquarters and manufacturing facilities in Rome. During the second half of the 20th century, Rome was home to Griffiss Air Force Base and the Rome Air Development Center. Although the base closed in 1993 and has since been redeveloped for housing and office parks, the RADC continues in operation as part of the Rome Research Site.
