Garfield is a city on the Passaic River in Bergen County, New Jersey, with a current population of just under 30,500. First developed in 1873 as East Passaic, Garfield changed its name in 1881 to honor then-United States President James Garfield. Garfield was incorporated as a city in 1917. Once known for its woolen mills and chemical plants, Garfield today has a more diversified economy, with more service-related businesses. Typical employers include Arctic Ice Manufacturing Corporation, founded in 1923, Lift Truck Technology and Wind-Tight Systems, Inc.

Agriculture, fishing, and fur trapping were common occupations in Garfield until the 19th century. Around 1800, several small industries, including saw and grist mills, a shipwright’s and a general store were established. In 1881, Garfield’s first railroad line was built, and soon followed by several others. By the 20th century, industrialization was underway in earnest. The Fritzsche Brothers fragrance and flavorings plant was acquired in 1900 by the Heyden Chemical Company, which made salicylic acid and saccharin. The site was later occupied by Tenneco Chemical and Kalama Chemical. Woolen mills were numerous, including Forstmann & Huffmann (est. 1904), Garfield Worsted Mills, New Jersey Worsted Spinning Company, and Gera Mills. Many of these companies were German-owned, and were seized by the United States Government during World War I, and resold later to local owners. Garden State Paper Company, the first successful manufacturer of recycled newsprint, was founded in 1961. The plant closed in 2002 following the collapse of its parent company, Enron, and was demolished in 2009.

Garfield’s history of manufacturing and construction places it in a high risk category for asbestos exposure. Workers exposed to asbestos may be at risk for asbestos-related diseases, such as mesothelioma. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with mesothelioma in Garfield, you may benefit from contacting an experienced mesothelioma doctor. Mesothelioma lawyers may also be able to assist if you or a loved one were exposed to asbestos in Garfield, New Jersey.
